If you're after jewellery you can wear every single day without worrying, stainless steel has probably popped up in your search. And the next question tends to follow straight after: will it tarnish? Every HYFN piece is made in stainless steel, so it's something we get asked a lot. Here's the honest answer, along with what makes it so hard-wearing and how to keep your pieces looking their best.
The short answer: no
Stainless steel doesn't tarnish the way sterling silver or brass do. There's no dark film creeping in, no dull patches after a few weeks in a drawer, and no green marks left on your skin. That reliability is a big part of why it's become such a go-to for everyday jewellery, especially if you'd rather wear your pieces than worry about them.
What makes stainless steel so tarnish-resistant?

Stainless steel is an alloy, which simply means it's a mix of metals. It's mostly iron, combined with chromium and small amounts of other elements depending on the grade.
Chromium is the real star here. When it meets the oxygen in the air, it forms an incredibly thin, invisible shield across the surface of the metal. That shield stops moisture and air from reaching the steel underneath, which is exactly what causes other metals to tarnish or rust.
The clever bit? If the surface gets a little scuff, that protective layer naturally re-forms on its own. It's quietly looking after your jewellery all the time, without you having to do a thing.
Stainless steel vs sterling silver
Sterling silver is made from 92.5% pure silver mixed with other metals, usually copper. It's beautiful, but silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, so over time it darkens, turning yellowish, grey or even black. It happens faster in humid conditions, or when pieces are left tucked away rather than worn. Keeping silver bright means regular polishing and taking it off before the shower or the gym.
Stainless steel simply doesn't react in the same way. Thanks to that chromium shield, you can shower, work out and go about your day in it without the same worries.
How stainless steel compares to other jewellery metals

Here's a quick look at how it stacks up against other popular choices:

Solid gold and titanium are both great at resisting tarnish too. Solid gold comes with a much higher price tag and is softer, while titanium is lighter but very similar to stainless steel in how it handles everyday life.
Where our 18K gold PVD comes in
At HYFN, we take a 316L stainless steel base and finish it with 18K gold using PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition), a coating process that bonds the gold tightly to the steel. That gives you two layers of peace of mind: a tarnish-resistant core, and a warm gold finish that's far tougher than traditional plating.
It's how our pieces stay waterproof, sweat-proof, tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic, and why we're happy to back every one of them with our lifetime guarantee. Want to know more about the gold side of things? Have a read of our guide to PVD gold.
Is stainless steel good for sensitive skin?
Generally, yes. Good-quality stainless steel, particularly the 316L grade often called surgical steel, is a popular pick for sensitive skin. It does contain a small amount of nickel, but it's held so tightly within the metal that very little reaches your skin, which is why it's widely considered hypoallergenic.
If you have a severe nickel allergy, though, titanium is the safest bet, as it's completely nickel-free. And if you're ever unsure, it's always worth a quick chat with your GP or a dermatologist before buying.
Can stainless steel ever change colour?

We'll be honest: stainless steel is very resistant, but it isn't indestructible. In a few rare situations, you might notice a slight change on the surface:
- Harsh chemicals. Regular water is absolutely fine, but repeated contact with bleach, strong cleaning products or long soaks in heavily chlorinated water can affect the surface over time.
- Long spells in salty, humid conditions. Extended exposure to saltwater combined with high humidity can occasionally leave very minor marks.
- Lower-quality steel. Not all stainless steel is equal. Grades with less chromium have a weaker protective layer, so quality really does make a difference.
Even then, any change is usually small and much milder than the tarnish you'd see on silver.
Why stainless steel is made for everyday life
- Low-maintenance. No constant polishing or careful handling needed.
- Water-friendly. Shower, gym, holiday swim: it keeps up with your routine.
- Built to last. It resists tarnish and scratches, so it keeps its good looks with daily wear.
- Affordable. You get durable, beautiful jewellery without the price of solid gold or platinum.
How to keep your pieces looking their best
A few easy habits go a long way:
- Wipe it now and then with a soft, dry cloth to lift off skin oils and product build-up. For a deeper clean, wash it in warm water with a drop of mild soap, use a soft cloth or soft brush to reach any little details, then rinse and dry well.
- Rinse after a swim in the pool or sea, then pat dry.
- Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and sun cream.
- Take it off for cleaning day, so bleach and sprays stay well away.
- Store pieces separately in their pouches. Stainless steel is very scratch-resistant, but gemstones and other hard pieces can still leave the odd mark.

The bottom line

So, does stainless steel jewellery tarnish? In everyday life, no. The chromium in the metal creates a natural protective layer that stops it darkening the way silver does. Very harsh conditions or lower-quality steel can occasionally cause a little discolouration, but it's still one of the most durable, low-fuss options around.
Whether you love it for its practicality, its price or simply its sleek, modern look, stainless steel finished in 18K gold PVD is jewellery made to be lived in: worn every day, through busy routines and every moment that matters.
